BROADWAY SIGNS!

Past Performances

Antwayn Hopper is an Obie Award Winning-American actor of Stage, Film and Television. He was Woodson; Dr. Algernon C. Edwards' (Andre Holland) asst. on Steven Soderberg's The Knick (Cinemax). At New York City Center he was seen as Memphis in Billy Porter's adaptation of THE LIFE, opposite Ledisi. Hopper's performance garnered spot #2 in "NY Times 23 Unforgettable Theater Moments of 22!" as Scott Heller, quoted, "The sculpted Antwayn Hopper and his otherworldly bass-baritone - especially in "My Way or the Highway," the character's signature song - was the thrilling answer. He was the standout in a production." He created Thought 6 (Inwood Daddy) in the original cast of the Pulitzer and '22 Tony Award Winner for Best Musical, A Strange Loop by Michael R. Jackson. Of Mr. Hopper's performance, NY Times' Maya Philips mentioned "Hopper, who most recently appeared as the monstrous pimp in the New York City Center's production of "The Life," and has a bass voice with the richness of hot honey, is downright viperous in the musical's most harrowing scene, set ironically to an upbeat country rhythm. It's is one of the best examples of the score's incongruous approach." Source: IMDb

HARRIET TUBMAN EFFECT: INTO THE WOODS

IN PROGRESS

Harriet Tubman Effect collaborates SIGNmation and Broadway SIGNs!

We are really proud to create an initiative for the Broadway Cast of Into the Woods to learn ASL while on their National Tour. Maria Porto, Access Broadway has joined the national tour providing Audio Description (AD) and Closed Captioning (CC) on tablets for Deaf/HH  and Blind patrons requiring accessibility for performances. The cast desired to learn ASL to better communicate with Maria who is Deaf. SIGNmation has coordinated Deaf Actors to tutor the Cast weekly in American Sign Language (ASL). We are hoping other tours will also follow suit! Amelia Hensley (Broadway’s Spring Awakening), Gabriel Silva (Deaf West’s Fidelio) and Joey Antonio (Spring Awakening, Mr. Holland’s Opus) are our ASL Tutors and Jo-Ann Dean is Coordinator of the program April - July!

Gabriel states “music and ASL drive me to be the artist I am today.”

Jo-Ann Dean: Broadway SIGNs!
