DIRECTOR CAMERON S. MITCHELL ON “KRYPTONITE”

APRIL 2023

“This past week has been an incredibly humbling experience as we wrap production on this amazing film about two old flames (R&B singer Shanice and Ryan Lane [Switched at Birth]) who reconnect only to discover that one has a secret that will change both of their worlds forever. I got to see this incredible vision come to life from our team and really focus on directing this piece. As some of you may know, I have a very specific image in mind for my projects and usually I’m more involved in the camera dept as a Director/DP but it was incredible to step back from that and put this project’s look in the hands of DP Matt Smith (you’re the man). I can’t thank the team at ZEISS Camera Lenses for trusting in my work and wanting to support us with Radiance Supreme Prime Lenses. These lenses shined and were perfect for this music inspired project that took look inspiration from A STAR IS BORN among other films. It was an honor to get to work with the R&B singer Shanice Wilson in one of her first narrative space acting roles, creating these characters in the real lived experience of our actors is part of what makes this story so strong. Abel Cine for coming in with the incredible support of an ARRI Alexa Mini LF among other items to bring this project to the next level. Zack Auron for setting up that possibility for us as well (if you need an A35 hit him up he’s got one!). Ryan Lane was just incredible to work with and his talent as an actor really shines in this one. He was my 1-2 take wonder on set and without his expertise and preparedness this film wouldn’t be what it is. Veronika Guncheva kept us on schedule and her input was invaluable to getting the film done in a logistically possible way. Thanks to my producing and creative partners David S. Zimmerman and Penni Wilson on this project for believing in me and trusting that I had what it takes to lead this project as a director. And of course it always come back to the man who started it all Nic Novicki who told me this year in Park City when I was there with my film Elsa that I would be directing a project this year for Easterseals Disability Film Challenge and I didn’t believe him. Giving me an opportunity to speak on access/disability and cinematography is what lead to the creation of this opportunity and spread valuable information about how film production innately has access built into it if we can only realize it’s strengths (sets being optimized for wheeled access like hand carts and lift gates, the incorporation and inclusion of disability advisory roles such as the ones we had on this set like Brian M. Cole as the Director of Artistic Sign Language and the incredible Jo-Ann Dean who produced on this project and brought the SIGNmation team including 5 ASL interpreters who made this project possible: Hope Simon, Zackary Goldstein, Mona Jean, Dany Castro, and Darla Hitchins). My thanks to the incredible cast and crew on this project: Shaun Everay, Jordan Sadler, Spencer Rawnsley, Elaine Pusey, Kyle Baughman, Kevin Kang, Augusto Garcia, Trevaughn Leslie, Camille Dupin, Molly Maloney, Caroline Plyler, Kevin Kegham, Raymond Dunn, Crystal Wilson, Imani Knox, and Dana Brazil. I can’t wait to show you all what we’ve created and for this project to be reviewed by Sony and Netflix executives. Representation matters and seeing that representation authentically on screen is among the most important things we can do to share the lives, experiences, and stories of the disability community and how deep of a well of stories there are to tell that we have yet to even scratch the surface of [Everything Everywhere All At Once was just the beginning]. Thank you to Ravit Markus and Dan Katzir for being incredible filmmaker friends and supports that made my stay in LA possible at their beautiful place in Park La Brea. They are friends I met through Documentary Filmmakers with Disabilities (FWD-Doc) which is a group that has provided and continues to provide incredible opportunities for disabled filmmakers. That’s all the spoons I have for now, WHEW keep your eyes peeled for the film when it posts in the upcoming week! [If someone has the spoons to do some image descriptions in the comments below I’d be grateful but also only if you have the time. There’s a lot of images!]”
